INNOVATION STORY · NON-INFLATABLE POOL
Non-Inflatable Pool Development: From No Inflation to No Assembly
Three generations of structural development—from high-density panel support to an integrated galvanized-steel frame.
“In 2020, we asked a simple question: Could a pool work without inflation?”
Could a Pool Work Without Inflation?
In 2020, while looking at how consumers used backyard pools, we kept seeing familiar frustrations. Inflatable pools required inflation, deflation and careful storage. Traditional frame pools offered greater structure, but added assembly and disassembly.
Instead of simply improving either format, we asked a different question: Could there be another way?
That question became the starting point for our non-inflatable pool.
The First Version Didn't Work.
Our first prototype proved the idea was possible—but it was far from a finished product.
Early versions did not yet hold their shape under water load, and some structures were too heavy, difficult to fold or inefficient to manufacture. Stability, material performance, leakage, weight, production efficiency and cost all had to work together.
Over the next two years, we tested different materials, structures and production methods, building and refining approximately 20–30 prototypes before reaching a commercially viable design.
High-Density Panel Structure
By 2022 the question had a product answer. The Gen 1 pool used built-in high-density panels to give the wall its shape: a foldable, self-supporting structure with no inflatable air chamber.
That structure also set the ceiling. Because the wall itself carries the water load, a taller pool means greater load and lateral pressure acting on the sidewall. In practice this high-density-panel construction served pool heights of approximately 45–50 cm—the engineering constraint that shaped everything that came after.
- Built-in high-density panels form a foldable, self-supporting wall
- No inflation: no pump and no air chamber to manage
- Unfolds for use and folds flat again for storage
No pump. No inflation. No traditional frame assembly. Simply unfold the pool, position it, and it's ready to fill.
External Galvanized-Steel Supports
The next challenge was structural support. Gen 2 kept the high-density-panel body and added external galvanized-steel supports, which strengthened how the wall carries that load and opened up new product configurations.
The body itself stayed a high-density-panel structure, so pool heights remained within the same practical range as Gen 1. What changed was the product around it: an oval format and a removable sunshade canopy, turning one pool into a family.

Integrated Galvanized-Steel Frame
The latest challenge was to go taller, and to stop handing the buyer a frame to assemble. Gen 3 integrates the galvanized-steel frame into the pool construction: the supporting structure is part of the pool rather than a separate frame system fitted around a liner.
The result is greater structural support and pool heights up to 120 cm, with no conventional frame assembly. The integrated frame opens in seconds: unfold, position, fill.
Not a conventional above-ground frame pool: the frame is integrated into the pool structure rather than supplied as a separate frame system to assemble.

Protected Across Key Markets.
As the product moved from development to market, COMCO also began protecting the innovation and related designs across key markets.
Our intellectual-property portfolio for the non-inflatable pool includes registrations in markets such as the United States, Germany, Japan and China, reflecting continued investment not only in product development, but also in protecting the ideas behind it.
Innovation & Engineering
It Started With a Question.
The non-inflatable pool did not begin with a request to build another pool—it began with a question about how pools should work. Three generations later, that question is still producing new answers. If you are developing or sourcing a pool program, bring us the target size, market and price point, and our engineering team will work the structure with you.
